Hi Dalia,

These are really nice palm trees! Do these palm trees have a fruit? Are they date palms? I have eaten dates a few times. They have an interesting flavor. Is this a river in the picture, or is it just an irrigation canal?

Hi David,

This is Shatt-al-Arab, where the river Tigris joins the river Euphrates.
These are date palms. Basra has the most extensive date groves in the world. Those are automatically fed with fresh water when the water level in the river rises twice a day because of the sea tide. The number of fruitful palm trees here, is over eight and a half million.

Every picture I see of Iraq seems so different, its seems like there's a little bit of everything there. If the Tigris & Euphrates was that beautiful and green all those centuries ago, I can see why that the first modern civilization settled in that area. It seems like a bountiful place. Thanks for the picture, Dalia.

Dalia,

This picture was mostly likely taken in أبو الخصيب . It was my favorite picnic area.
