THE CITY OF BAGHDAD
Baghdad, as a name, had been mentioned as (Baghdadu) on the Assyrian cuneiform records of the ninth century BC. It also appeared in many other historical records prior to the Christian era.

The historical records of the later period mentioned that AL-Mansur, the second Abbasid Caliph, (754-775 AD) had established his capital (The Round City) in almost the same location in 762 AD.

Soon after, Baghdad had flourished and expanded to cover a wide area on both banks of Tigris. It lasted as the capital of the Abbasid Dynasty up to the Mongol invasion in 1258 AD. Nevertheless, the city of Baghdad went on as the capital of Iraq up to the present time.

Welcome to Iraq
Iraq is a land which has been accustomed to receiving everyone gladly, because of its position as a link between east and west since the oldest times.
Iraq is a land which is one of the richest in te world in history. Here humanity knew settled agriculture for the first time and discoverd writing, the most important prop to civilization.
The earliest known code of laws were written ere to organize human life on a legal basis. The first and oldest university was also founded in this land. Here the wheel was invinted for the first time, and the first engineering structure and designs were discoverd, and for the first time an agriculture calendar was devised by which the farmer could tell the seasons and types of crops suitable for each of them.
Iraq is the land of black gold, which suddenly gushed out of its soil, this land small in area but abundant in riches. Iraq is a land of the Tigris and the Euphrates... land of palm trees and delicious, plentiful fruit... the land of the warm and evershining sun.
The "land between the rivers", as the Greek name MESOPOTAMIA means, was a fabulously fertile country. Because it was surrounded by deserts and mountainous regions, it was always a timpting prize for people inhabiting the less rich neighbouring areas. its history was one of successive conquests and defeates, now told by the ruins of great and famous cities Babylon of the Hanging Gardens, Nineveh and others.
